Collaborative
Projects take learning beyond the boundaries of the classroom, putting students
in touch with individuals around the world. Several organizations maintain these
projects to promote cultural exchange.
Flat Stanley
An extension activity of the popular
2nd grade book, students make Flat Stanleys and begin a journal with him for a
few days. Then Flat Stanley and the journal are sent to another school where students
there treat Flat Stanley as a guest and complete the journal. Flat Stanley and
the journal are then returned to the original sender. Students can plot his travels
on maps and share the contents of the journal.
KIDLINK/KIDPROJ
A database of projects for students and other kids age 5 to 15.
Multicultural
Calendar Entries include descriptions of the unique ways KIDLINK students
are celebrating their country's holidays and festivals. May contain holiday recipes,
historical background, significance, and the special ways in which these days
are observed.
Multicultural
Recipe Book Provides students with an opportunity to learn about and experience
differences and similarities of cultures, traditions, and foods (recipes) within
and across a variety of cultures.
iEarn
The International Education and Resource Network (iEARN) is a non-profit organization
made up of over 4,000 schools in nearly 100 countries. iEARN empowers teachers
and young people to work together online at very low cost using the Internet and
other new technologies.
Lewin Project Lewin
is an anthology of student writing. Writing can be in any format and on any topic.
The project is coordinated and published by a group of students and teachers in
Australia and Pakistan. (Try the Aga Khan School in Pakistan for reflections on
students' "sacred place.")
Role
of Women in Family and Society Students will research the role of women in
their families and in the community, then report their findings and reflect on
the findings of others. Supported in Arabic, English, and French.
Friendship
Through Education Supports
collaboration between students in the United States with those in Islamic countries.
Currently supports exchange for three schools most directly affected by September
11th; ultimate goal is to link an American school in every state with a school
in countries with Muslim populations in the Middle, Near and Far East. In the
interim, provides a database of resources from members of the consortium.
Schools
Outfitting Schools Project In conjunction with the official reopening of school
in Afghanistan, The Friendship Through Education (FTE) Consortium and the US Fund
for UNICEF launched the Schools Outfitting Schools Campaign (SOS) to support Afghan
students and teachers. Couple this with an investigation of other statistics on
literacy (CIA
Factbook) and a dynamic service learning project can be had.
Electronic
Emissary An Internet-based
service coordinated from the University of Texas at Austin that matches K-12 teachers
and students with experts in different disciplines.
